King’s Café has long been a familiar name in Maryborough, remembered as a welcoming meeting place in the heart of the city. Throughout much of the 20th century, it served as a spot where people gathered before shows, shared meals, and connected with friends and family. The upstairs spaces, which once hosted dances and social functions, added to its reputation as a lively hub in Maryborough’s social scene.

Now, King’s Café is being reimagined as part of the Central Entertainment Group precinct. The restoration project is strengthening and revitalising the building while respecting its heritage character, with a vision to create a venue that blends history with modern nightlife. Plans include transforming the upstairs hall into an intimate jazz club and cocktail lounge — a space that captures the charm of its past while offering a fresh experience for today’s audiences.

When complete, King’s Café will return as more than just a café — it will be a cultural touchpoint within the precinct, celebrating music, creativity, and connection. Its transformation will honour the building’s role in Maryborough’s history while carving out an exciting new chapter as a destination for entertainment and social life on the Fraser Coast.

Converge has prepared a Conservation Management Plan for the ongoing heritage management of the building and is assisting with heritage approvals, as well as undertaking heritage supervision of the works.
